Fall 2016 Alumni Game recap from Coach Bob Macnab

The score 10 to 55! But a flip from the usual as the students won. A beautiful but warm day with a prevailing wind straight down the pitch the game opened with the wind in the Alums favor things looked steady with good defense from both sides and then the students started on a string of penalties upon which the Alums failed to capitalize, after that the students settled down and the Alums began an excessive amount of penalties that lasted the rest of the game.  Tries by Grasshopper (still going strong at 43) and David Bible was ultimately all the Alums could manage. Quite a few breakout trys from the students as the game wore on and tired legs set in. The turnout for the Alums was exceptionally low from the norm and the students fielded more players than the Alums for the first time and fitness took a great toll. Tyson Marks was awarded Man of the Match and Bill Moser Oldest Participant (56). The students looked very good and I expect they will do very well in their division this year.

The crowd was big and enthusiastic. Prayer by Raph Flood. Halftime saw the largest number of children running races under Bill Demers supervision. The Alums had a super gathering for Bar B Que on Friday night hosted by our good friends Joe and Theresa Losole  where first and only attempt at the Yard by Alec Thies was almost successful. A technicolor yawn ensued!

The after game gathering at Spirit Grill organized by Kate Roberson was very well attended and a great time had by all. Usual awards and speeches and a successful 50-50 raffle organized by Nino Burkert raised over $300 for GRAA, after the winner donated back his winnings.

There is the possibility of a mini Alum game early next year UD schedule permitting and Alum participation there . Stay tuned and in Touch. Thanks to all attended, played and helped organize. I would particularly like to publicly thank my family for all they do from organizing, getting awards to washing jerseys and all else in between.  It was a great weekend!

Of note this year: the very first father son matchup. Chris Bennet (class of 92) played against his son Bill a freshman at UD, as well as playing with nephew Kevin Flannery a recent grad and against two more nephews at UD Danny Flannery and John Paul Jones.  Chris (Homer) was captain at UD for two years and is still going strong just having a baby this year!

January Alumni Game recap

From Coach Macnab:

The first midyear mini Alum game took place on Jan 31st, which happened to coincide with UD’s Groundhog. How appropriate. The weather looked ominous with a big cold rain forecasted but the Rugby Gods heard us so we did not get rain until the last ten minutes or so,  it turned out to be a great day for Rugby. Twenty Eight Alums turned out so everyone got some Rugby in. There were about eight notable no-shows for people who had committed to come, careful guys you might find a horse’s head in your bed! The student side had plenty of players and all played. Several starters laid out with small injuries and give the others a chance to run. The Alums scored in the first 30 seconds and it looked bleak for the kids but they managed to pull it together and it turned out to be a very good game, final score was 29 – 13 for the Alums.  The Alums looked resplendent in the brand new Orange and Navy hooped jerseys and there were flashes of brilliance form the likes of Tom Bresee, Danny Torrez and Chris Botto. Bill Moser moved mountains par usual (guys he is 55 so don’t give me this too old bit) and Coach Matt Jones got in two periods to test out his own front rows. The students tackled well but just could not overcome the incredible support the Alums generated.

Hope that this can be repeated but as we have no control over cup match scheduling we will just have to play it by ear. Speaking of Cup Matches UD has four home cups in a row this Feb. The Lads are looking good and we are 5th in the Texas group of 13. We have been greatly bolstered by ten returning Romers this spring and we have good numbers fighting for spots. So come on out and cheer the lads on.

From Coach Macnab

OK, game on!!! Email your official RSVP for playing in this January Alumni game to bmacnab@swsfinancial.com

I have had quite a number of very quick positive responses. In making up the roster for this year’s Alum game I noticed we have a lot of more Alums in the close geographical area than normal and I ran up a quick list of 25 off the top of my head. The purpose here is of course to have fun and more Rugby for the Alums but I felt it would be beneficial to the students to get in an early game hopefully before they begin Cup play but that can’t happen as they have thier first Cup match scheduled for Jan 24th so the 31st is the first chance we have. They will only have two training sessions before the first game. This will also give us a chance to play students who are not starters and need to play.

I am very excited about our student side his year with a lot of new potential talent and we have ten in Rome coming back for the Spring.  We traveled to San Angelo this past weekend to take on the Rams who have been beating everyone in the conference by 30 to 40 points.  We started out by giving up two tries in the first 5 minutes and at half time it was 24 to nil. We gave up another at the start of the second half so it was 31 to zip and not looking good. Then the lads began to play and took over the game, something very unusual in UD’s history as many of you will remember. In the latter 25 minutes we scored 4 tries and put up 24 points!! SO WE LOST 24 TO 31.  Given another 5 minutes we would have tied or won the game. We at least picked up 2 conference points for putting up 4 tries and losing by less than 10.  The Rams had no idea what hit them. We came home with our heads up. We played ten rookies in the game. So you better be ready in Jan!

GRAA members and first responders  will be given playing priority. I will give you a list as it develops.

Alumni Game 2014 pics and letter from Coach Macnab

Hi All,

Thank you for your continued support! The Groundhog Alumni Game pics are available here and on the GRAA Facebook page (I also finally got around to posting the 2012 and 2013 pics on our website): http://groundhogrugbyalumni.org/photo-gallery/alumni-game-2014

From Coach Bob Macnab:

Letter to UDRFC Alums,

October 4th 2014 turned out to be a glorious day weather-wise and all aspects. The Alums showed up in force and won by 43 to 7 but most will attest to this being one of the hardest hitting in quite a few years and the score did not reflect the game. Last year we had a shortage of backs, not so this time. We had a total of 40 that played, 19 backs and 21 forwards – very well balanced. There were a total of 32 students in the game. Bean refereed.  Several Alums that approached me late in the third or fourth period with a “ I’m here Coach put me in.”  This does not work. This is still Rugby and if you want to play show up before the game. It is hard enough making up sides and sharing the playing time without late comers. Preference is shown to those that help, GRAA members and who shows first by position.  There is a possibility we may have to go  to 5 x 15 minute periods to allow more playing time.

We had a big crowd and the kids had a blast and a big halftime race event. A Piper was there inspiring us all. I love kids and Pipers! The afters at the Cellar was very good with quite a crowd and Bean was on particularly good form with The Warriors! The Friday night Alum gathering was great fun, but we need more participation at this great venue. Please strive to attend the Friday night gathering next year.

If you are an Alum and not a member of the GRAA shame on you. This gathering each year is basically sponsored by the GRAA. Membership available by paying your dues at the Alumni weekend or mailing a check payable to GRAA (email me for details). We need all the help we can get so if you are not in, get in and give back a little to Rugby. To those that have made donations to the GRAA I thank you from the bottom of my heart and you are special. The GRAA can accept donations any time of the year. We use these funds to provide grants to both UD students and other rugby clubs.

See you on the pitch, Coach
