January Alumni Game recap

From Coach Macnab:

The first midyear mini Alum game took place on Jan 31st, which happened to coincide with UD’s Groundhog. How appropriate. The weather looked ominous with a big cold rain forecasted but the Rugby Gods heard us so we did not get rain until the last ten minutes or so,  it turned out to be a great day for Rugby. Twenty Eight Alums turned out so everyone got some Rugby in. There were about eight notable no-shows for people who had committed to come, careful guys you might find a horse’s head in your bed! The student side had plenty of players and all played. Several starters laid out with small injuries and give the others a chance to run. The Alums scored in the first 30 seconds and it looked bleak for the kids but they managed to pull it together and it turned out to be a very good game, final score was 29 – 13 for the Alums.  The Alums looked resplendent in the brand new Orange and Navy hooped jerseys and there were flashes of brilliance form the likes of Tom Bresee, Danny Torrez and Chris Botto. Bill Moser moved mountains par usual (guys he is 55 so don’t give me this too old bit) and Coach Matt Jones got in two periods to test out his own front rows. The students tackled well but just could not overcome the incredible support the Alums generated.

Hope that this can be repeated but as we have no control over cup match scheduling we will just have to play it by ear. Speaking of Cup Matches UD has four home cups in a row this Feb. The Lads are looking good and we are 5th in the Texas group of 13. We have been greatly bolstered by ten returning Romers this spring and we have good numbers fighting for spots. So come on out and cheer the lads on.
Coach,

Bob Macnab

Alumni Game 2014 pics and letter from Coach Macnab

Hi All,

Thank you for your continued support! The Groundhog Alumni Game pics are available here and on the GRAA Facebook page (I also finally got around to posting the 2012 and 2013 pics on our website): http://groundhogrugbyalumni.org/photo-gallery/alumni-game-2014

From Coach Bob Macnab:

Letter to UDRFC Alums,

October 4th 2014 turned out to be a glorious day weather-wise and all aspects. The Alums showed up in force and won by 43 to 7 but most will attest to this being one of the hardest hitting in quite a few years and the score did not reflect the game. Last year we had a shortage of backs, not so this time. We had a total of 40 that played, 19 backs and 21 forwards – very well balanced. There were a total of 32 students in the game. Bean refereed.  Several Alums that approached me late in the third or fourth period with a “ I’m here Coach put me in.”  This does not work. This is still Rugby and if you want to play show up before the game. It is hard enough making up sides and sharing the playing time without late comers. Preference is shown to those that help, GRAA members and who shows first by position.  There is a possibility we may have to go  to 5 x 15 minute periods to allow more playing time.

We had a big crowd and the kids had a blast and a big halftime race event. A Piper was there inspiring us all. I love kids and Pipers! The afters at the Cellar was very good with quite a crowd and Bean was on particularly good form with The Warriors! The Friday night Alum gathering was great fun, but we need more participation at this great venue. Please strive to attend the Friday night gathering next year.

If you are an Alum and not a member of the GRAA shame on you. This gathering each year is basically sponsored by the GRAA. Membership available by paying your dues at the Alumni weekend or mailing a check payable to GRAA (email me for details). We need all the help we can get so if you are not in, get in and give back a little to Rugby. To those that have made donations to the GRAA I thank you from the bottom of my heart and you are special. The GRAA can accept donations any time of the year. We use these funds to provide grants to both UD students and other rugby clubs.

See you on the pitch, Coach

Hey this is Paul (c/o 2011). As you may know, the USA Eagles are playing Scotland in Houston this summer. Below is a link for ticket deals:
http://www.voicedailydeals.com/houston/deals/half-off-usa-vs-scotland-rugby-tickets/?utm_source=newsletter-houston&utm_medium=VOICEemail-houston&utm_campaign=dotdemail-houston

This will be the third year in a row that a top tier european RFC will be visiting to play the Eagles in Houston. Each year, the game has been the largest crowd at a rugby event ever in USA history.

I have been the last 2 years and the games have been a blast.

One thing that I noticed, however, when walking around the parking lots leading up to the game is that a lot of old boys were tailgating together with their clubs. I am talking about some of our biggest competitors: SMU, Texas State, Sam Houston, UT, SFA.

This got me thinking, wouldn’t it be great if we could have an official GRAA tailgate for the game? Get as many of the old boys and current players down for the match. Last year there was a competition for best tailgating crew that got brought out to the middle of the stadium at half time and given an award.

Just spitballin’ here, but I think it would be a great time to get together (other than the Alumni game), we would get to watch some world class rugby in a great stadium.

I live in Houston and would love to help out if at all possible.

Thanks,

Paul

Dear Friends,

As many of you know, in April of this year Michael Burns (Pascale Raoul Burns husband) underwent intrusive neurosurgery for a benign brain tumor. Although the surgery has resulted in an optimistic prognosis, the Burns family has confronted considerable financial debt during this uncertain medical crisis.

In response to popular demand and many loving inquiries from friends of the Burns, we are reaching out to inform you that a Burns Family Fundraiser bank account has been created through the generosity and courtesy of the Park Ridge Community Bank. We hope that you will consider making a donation of any nominal amount to this young family to help them regain their stability while Michael recovers and is released to return to teaching at Northridge College Prep. We seek to raise sufficient funds to help the family meet the necessities of their four young children, keep a roof over their heads, and reduce the increasing medical costs not covered by group health insurance. May God compensate your generosity tenfold with his bountiful Grace.

Donations may be made payable either directly to the Burns Family Fundraiser, at the Park Ridge Community Bank, 626 Talcott Road, Park Ridge, IL 60068, Telephone 847-384-9200, www.timetobank.com; or to the Burns Family Fundraiser PayPal account. Please follow these instructions for depositing donations through the PayPal electronic fund transfer account:

1. Connect to www.paypal.com

2. Enter Burnsfamilyfundraiser@hotmail.com

3. Hit “Send Money”

Please be advised that your donation isnot tax exempt, and will be acknowledged as a personal gift to the Burns family. Of course, please continue to pray for Michael and his family that the light at the end of this tunnel will soon be shown to them.

Friends, we have tried to reach everyone to share this letter but we may have inadvertently missed someone so please feel free to pass this on to other friends who we may have missed. Thanks kindly.

If you have any questions please email Burnsfamilyfundraiser@hotmail.com.

Many thanks,
Lucia Pardilla and Lupe Garcia
