Alumni beat students in annual Rugby match

The UD Groundhog Alumni were triumphant yet again! A great game was played be each side, but the the wisdom and experience of the alumni proved too much for a fairly fresh student side. As usual, the fans enjoyed the beer garden, raffle, and halftime kiddie race.

The GRAA thanks all the supporters and fans. We raised about $1500 to continue our support of collegiate rugby in the US. Looking forward to seeing everyone in October 2012!

Rugby Alumni Unite to Support Current Players

University of Dallas students face demanding schedules. On- and off-campus obligations can squeeze out extra-curricular commitments. The Groundhog Rugby Alumni Association (GRAA) hopes that through their new rugby scholarship award players will be able to worry more about competition on the pitch than competition for their time.

The scholarship came about when UD Rugby Coach, Mr. Matt Jones ’01, noticed that some current rugby players had left the team for off-campus jobs. “We started losing good players who had to spend that time making extra money,” said GRAA President, Mr. Alex Halisky ’98. Through the scholarship, the GRAA can provide support to rugby players who maintain a 2.5 GPA and demonstrate a financial need, removing some of the pressure to add off-campus obligations. Such efforts work to cement the GRAA’s support of not just rugby as a sport but rugby players as students.

UD rugby alumni founded the GRAA as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to promote collegiate rugby. In addition to advocacy, they raise funds to support improvements at the Macnab Rugby Pitch. This philanthropic support for the team helps to promote rugby as a solid addition to the life of the University.

We will be playing Baylor at Rice University this Sat @ 1PM. If you are in the Houston area come on out and support the lads. Should we win we would play the winner of Rice/UNT at 1 PM on Sunday. From Bob Macnab

The team is 2 – 0 so far in cup play this fall and they travel to Houston this Sat to play Rice who is also 2 – 0. Rice is nationally ranked in our division at #23. Our last match of the Fall is a cup match with Baylor at UD on Dec 4th. We lost to both these teams last year in games we could have/should have won.  We have a very young side with only three seniors playing but they are very exciting to watch and so far are getting it done. We will be beefed up in the Spring with 12 returning from Rome and I think losing only 2.

I am relaying this to encourage support at games from our Alumni. It means a lot to the team. So come on out!

It is also very helpful to have old boys out to training, especially on Thursdays and our numbers have fallen off drastically this year. Halisky, McEwen, Dreisbach and Rowles show up some so they are fitter than the rest of you. You all have something to pass on to the younger players so give a little of yourself back and of course have fun doing it.

Hope to see you alongside the pitch or on it.  Coach
